Argentina to Gradually Lower Tire Import Tariffs
October 21, 2024

Recently, the President of Argentina signed Decree No. 908/2024, which reduces the tariff rates on 89 high-tariff products, including major automotive components such as car and motorcycle tires.

Starting from October 17, Argentina will begin a phased reduction of the import tariff on automotive tires. Initially, the tariff on these products will be reduced from 35% to 30%.

Beginning January 1, 2025, the tariff on automotive tires will further drop to 25% for a period of four months. On May 1, 2025, the tariff will decrease to 20%, and by September 1, 2025, it will be reduced to 16%.

The tariff on motorcycle tires will be reduced in two phases: a 10% reduction in the first phase, followed by a 5% reduction in the second phase.

This move aims to balance Argentina's tire prices with those of neighboring markets. Countries such as Chile and Paraguay, which do not have import tariffs, offer tires at much lower prices.

This disparity has led to a serious issue of tire smuggling in Argentina, disrupting the normal market order. Domestic consumers have expressed that due to the high import prices, only a reduction of the tariff to 16% will make a noticeable impact.
